Did They Have Doug Kmiec Write It?

Saint Obama

Making the rounds of Saint Blogs is the purported text on the honorary degree to be conferred by the Notre Dame law school upon Obama at Notre Dame on Obama Day, May 17, 2009:

“At the 164th Commencement The May Exercises

The University of Notre Dame Confers the degree of

Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, on the 44th president of the United States, whose historic election opened a new era of hope in a country long divided by its history of slavery and racism. A community organizer who honed his advocacy for the poor, the marginalized and the worker in the streets of Chicago, he now organizes a larger community, bringing to the world stage a renewed American dedication to diplomacy and dialogue with all nations and religions committed to human rights and the global common good. Through his willingness to engage with those who disagree with him and encourage people of faith to bring their beliefs to the public debate, he is inspiring this nation to heal its divisions of religion, culture, race and politics in the audacious hope for a brighter tomorrow.

On Barack H. Obama, Washington, District of Columbia”

If this is an accurate version of the text, I think this puts to rest any argument as to whether Notre Dame is honoring the most pro-abortion president in our nation’s history.  The document reads like a handout from the Obama campaign right down to the “hope” hot air.   Of course it left out a few aspects of Obama’ s career , no doubt in order to save space.  As always, Father Z’s comments are well worth reading.  Jay Anderson at Pro Ecclesia has a good assessment of what the University is saying to the bishops if the text is accurate

Law professor Vincent Rougeau of Notre Dame states that  “I think it’s good,” Rougeau said. “It identifies things he has done or attempts to do. The university invited him and he’s a dignitary that they’re welcoming. They drafted an elegant statement as to why they felt he was deserving of the invitation they extended.”  This statement indicates two things to me:  first, that the text is probably accurate since a Notre Dame law professor is defending it and second, that calling this mess an elegant statemnent indicates the type of Obama worship going on among some of the faculty at Notre Dame.  Surprise!  Rougeau served on the Catholic National Advisory Council of the Obama campaign last year.

That sounds like something Gerald Campbell could have written . . . i.e., fatuous, fawning, and obsequious.

Now I wait eagerly for Dear Leader’s appearance. I have full faith that many ND grads, alums, etc. will make appropriate non-violent but creative forms of protest. That MSM will be shocked- shocked!- at the disrespect given to a President of the United States at a commencement. Given such responses are common to those deemed politically incorrect by the highly sensitive on certain campus. Lessee— $8.2 mil in comtributions lost since Father Jenkins’ decision? No doubt this odometer will continue to roll. It’s all good. One of those Historically Defining Moments- Who Are We And What Shall Believe?
