Bishop Tobin Action Alerts

This morning I woke up and checked my inbox to find an “action alert” from a group called Catholic Democrats urging me to support Patrick Kennedy. They want us to contact Bishop Tobin and ask him to “stop using the Eucharist as a political weapon.” The alert might as well have been composed by Catholics for a Free Choice.

Well, I decided to do the opposite. I sent the bishop an email of support. And I don’t think it would be a bad idea for the rest of us to do the same. The email address provided in the alert is: This is for the communications office of the Diocese of Rhode Island.

The notion that Bishop Tobin is “using the Eucharist as a political weapon” is ridiculous. Bishop Tobin has simply held to the crazy idea that it does actually mean something to be a Catholic, and that the Eucharist is not something to be taken lightly. The complaining going on about this is like a child’s temper tantrum over not being able to have a cookie. Either you view the Eucharist as the body and blood of Christ, or you don’t. If you do, that means accepting what Scripture and Tradition have taught about what state a person must be in to partake of it worthily. If you don’t, then why be a Catholic at all?

No, I don’t want to be one of those “if you don’t like it, just leave it” people – but seriously, at what point do you just say, “this isn’t the Church for me?” Doesn’t one’s honor and dignity, their self-respect, rest upon making consistent moral decisions? Can one perpetually keep one foot in the Church and one in the pro-choice camp? If it really means that much to a person that they receive Holy Communion, shouldn’t they try to amend their lives in such a way as to be rendered worthy of it?

It is not Bishop Tobin that is using the Eucharist as a political tool, but Patrick Kennedy and all of his nominally Catholic supporters. They want the Eucharist because it will signify that there are no consequences for the reprehensible political positions they take. They want the Eucharist so they can continue milking the Catholic vote, so they can more easily call themselves Catholics when they go campaigning without having the awkwardness of a public scandal on their hands. Well I’m glad one bishop had the gall to stand up to them, and I hope he never wavers.

Thanks for this post. Sent my email of support.

Its fun to have a day off. Get to be the first to reply to a lot of posts 🙂

  2. Donald R. McClarey says:

Apparently the group anti-Catholic Democrats does not understand that Bishop Tobin enjoys the same freedom of speech that they wish to ejoy. I have sent an e-mail of support for the Bishop, too!

  3. Eric Brown says:

I got the same email. 🙂

  4. American Knight says:

What makes any of you think a Bishop has freedom of speech?

He doesn’t. In the modern world the current definition (I mean as of this moment becuase it’ll change shortly – just got the memo – it has changed). . .the current current defenition of freedom of speech is anyone can say whatever they want to say so long as it confroms to the Obama/Pelosi government programs being touted at the momment so as not to offend anyone with a different opinion, other than conservatives, Christians, Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck.

So we can call for choice in health care so long as it includes killing babies and we can call for choice in receiving Eucharist irrespective of dispostion, Church teaching, the bishop or St. Paul. However, it is not a choice to oppose the aforementioned.

Human freedom is broad, but it has limits. Those limits are set by Obama/Pelosi. Including limits on that god dude. Let me give god a shout-out, yo, you can do what you do but don’t contradict the Obama agenda. Peace out.

Ok – all kidding aside – sending email to bishop Tobin and forwarding to right-minded Catholics. Thanks for the address.

I sent my email in support yesterday. Good post. I will share it with others.
    God bless,

  6. Lois says:

To summarize that the democratic catholics want a bishop to let their soul stray from truth and allow them to ignorantly follow the flaming path into Hell is irresponsible. The bishop is doing EXACTLY what God has called him to do—-pastor to the sinner…and we all know the multitude of sinners in public office who are rejecting Catholic Teaching.
Out of curiosity could I call myself veggitarian and eat hambergers on a regular basis????? So would one be able to call themselves Catholic without following the teaching….of coarse not. There are no such things as catholic democrats. There are Catholics following the Church teachings, and there are protesters or commonly known as protest-ants.

  7. “Your Excellency,

Thank you so much for speaking the truth. Those of us Catholics that understand that we are expected to adhere to the teachings of the Church if we wish to be Catholic, and understand that we aren’t being forced to be Catholic, know that you are not using the Eucharist as a political weapon or any of that other nonsense. You are merely doing your job as a shepherd of Christ’s flock. THANK YOU for speaking up. May God bless you!

    Mrs. Michelle ~~~~~”

Ooh! I forgot to put, “In Christ and Our Lady”…

  8. Tim Shipe says:

Thanks for the email address- I’m with you- I’m sending my email of support for the Bishop as well- as a Catholic Democrat myself- I’m no fan of the neo-conservative and progressive Catholic tactic of creating an alternative hierarchy, picking and choosing bishops and aspects of the Magisterial social doctrine to promote, and all the while holding up their own ideologies and ideological political heroes as their popes and saints- if either camp were honest they would probably have to say that they are protestants who remain in the Catholic fold for reasons I cannot fully fathom.

  9. God Bless Bishop Tobin for having the courage to stand up for Authentic Catholic Teaching and Values. It is such a joy to see our faithful bishops speaking out.

  10. BTW, I hope everyone is aware of and signs the Manhattan Declaration.

  11. Joe Hargrave says:

What an amazing declaration. I signed it just now.

  12. christinatrombetta says:

Already wrote a letter of support. Bishop Tobin is amazing. How fortunate for Rhode Island

  13. Thank you for giving Bishop Tobin’s address so we can send our thanks to him for defending The Holy Eucharist!

Bishop Tobin is one of many of our great priests and bishops.

  14. joan scibetta says:

I, too, have sent Bishop Tobin a message of support. I so appreciate his taking his responsibilities seriously. Many of the Kennedys (not all) as well as many other so-called Catholics in public life, are making a shambles of their commitment to our faith.

  15. Fred says:

Bishop Tobin is a fine example of what it takes to be a Shepperd. Those “other ” Bishops that elected to stay silent should step down, NOW! Their passiveness, cowardice, and silence is the root cause of the ignorance our church members on the abortion issue. Our parish in Lake Co.IL does not touch the subject. God Help us! more power to Bishop Tobin. May St. Micheal watch over you, most reverend Fr. Tobin.

  16. Fred says:

VP Biden, speaker Pelosi, Justice Sottomayor, and all the rest of the supposedly “catholic” public figures, should be banned from communion. “either you are hot or cold, either you are with me or against me” says the Lord. I believe it’s a moral duty of our church leaders to follow the exemplary example of our champion Bishop Tobin. He is the reason why I am still a Catholic.
