Stupak: Senate Health Care Plan Dead in House

A very interesting interview from a man who is rapidly becoming my favorite Democrat in Congress:  Bart Stupak.  Stupak flatly states that the Senate Obamacare bill will fail and for two reasons:  public funding of abortion, and the tainted process by which the bill was passed in the Senate (think the Louisiana Purchase and the Cornhusker Kickback).  Stupak says that if the Senate bill isn’t changed it won’t even come close to passing in the House.  Stupak has been in Congress since 1993 and I suspect his view of the status of the Senate bill in the House is dead on accurate.

I’m still going to pray for the defeat of this pro-abortion bill, just to be safe.

I saw an interview with him where he said abortion will NOT derail the bill: http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/84827-stupak-says-12-previous-health-bill-supporters-could-flip-over-abortion

Intrade is predicting passage (55%–the highest rate ever)

  3. Donald R. McClarey says:

Steve, that is if Pelosi is willing to cave on abortion. She will not. Last time she convinced her pro-aborts to hold their noses and vote to pass the bill with Stupak in it by assuring them that in conference with the Senate the Stupak language would be removed. Under Reconciliation there would be no conference with the Senate. If the Senate amended the bill to remove Stupak, then the House would have to vote again. The problem for the Democrats is that a large majority of their members care far more for being pro-abortion than passing the health care bill. An additional problem is that a fair number of Blue Dog Democrats in Red States now realize that a yes vote on this mess is a one way vote to political defeat for them. I agree with Stupak, the Senate bill in its current form has no chance passing the House.

And we can thank Yoopers — residents of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula or “U.P.”, from whence Stupak hails — for electing him. I guess people who put up with 9 months of snow and 3 months of bad sledding every year can stand up to just about anything, or anyone 🙂

  5. Mike Petrik says:

Don, what you say is sensible, and I hope you are right. I’ve heard rumblings that some Dems are getting used to the idea that they will lose no matter how they vote, so they’ll support the measure and hope that the Administration will reward them with some type of DC position.
